Daring Greatly, too

This morning I re-watched the 90 minute conversation between Brené Brown and Chase Jarvis about her latest book, Daring Greatly.  I love that she had time to go deep into her story and her work.

Brené’s TEDxTalks are what inspired me to create HeartWork. I’m one of those to whom she gave language and vocabulary to be able to share with others the tools and skills I learned to heal my Heart.

I’m still chewing on some of what she shared.

Chase and Brené talked about how our schools are squashing creativity in our children – the future of this country and the world. Here’s what she had to say:

“Creativity is the key to how things travel from our Head to our Heart to our Hands.” Wow!  She also reminded us that unexpressed creativity isn’t benign. It metastasizes into an ugly expression of judgment, bullying, shaming, anger, depression, and more.

Did you know that over 85% of the people she interviewed had a shaming story from their school days that has shaped how they see themselves and show up in the world.  I have at least one story – Mr. Weller – 7th grade math class. From the age of 13 until I was 40 yrs old, I believed his lie. Then, I took a hard look at my resume and realized every job I had ever had required me to be good at math. Bells went off for me.

How about you?  Are you still allowing a shame story from school days to hold you back?

Watch the video. If you feel inspired by it, I’d love to hear what bubbled up for you as you listened to their conversation.
